Hey Everyone,
First, the news.....Christina's parents are safely back in the USA, and on their way to Chicago this evening!
Second, the politics......The responses I have seen in the news media after Ms. Meirs withdrew her nomination have been interesting. Both sides have taken an extreme view. The conservatives say that the next nominee had better have solid conservative credentials, or else they will not provide their consent. The democrats have said that the next nominee that is a hard conservative will be filibustered. This sounds like the making of gridlock to me! To me this result is another example of George W. being the great divider, instead of the uniter he claims to be.
Think back to the world prior to the Miers nomination, right after John Roberts was confirmed. The political environment was a lot less hostile with regard to nominations. I think people actually had faith that George W. was capable of picking a decent justice that didn't draw too much fire from opponents. Heck, even I liked Roberts.......then came Miers. Non-hostile environment? Gone. Trust in a glimmer of leadership? Toast! I sincerely hope there is a really good nominee of George W.'s list, or else we'll be stuck in political gridlock for a long, hostile time.
OK, off to go watch some TV and wait for Christina's parents to get back.
